THE FLOW OF PEOPLE IN BARCELONA

This project was completed in june 2023.

The summer of 2023 marked a pivotal chapter in my career, filled with profound insights and extensive travel across Western Europe. This journey not only enriched my cultural understanding but also steered my professional path toward new horizons.

One of the highlights was my tenure in Barcelona, where I had the privilege of working alongside esteemed architect Miguel Roldán, renowned for his award-winning projects throughout Catalonia. Collaborating closely with Miguel on several of his projects was incredibly enriching. It provided me with invaluable lessons in design and construction that have profoundly influenced my approach to architecture. Working with an architect of such caliber, especially in a culturally rich and architecturally dynamic city like Barcelona, proved to be immensely beneficial. Miguel’s focus on efficiency, sustainability, and innovative renovation techniques opened my eyes to new possibilities within the field. These principles not only changed my perspective but continue to inspire my design philosophy today.

Living in Barcelona offered me a unique perspective on the city’s architectural prowess and urban planning. Driven by my fascination with the city’s historical charm and modern efficiency, I chose to focus my end-of-study project on the dynamics of pedestrian flow in Barcelona. Despite its status as one of the most densely populated cities in Europe, I was struck by the seamless mobility throughout the city. Even during the bustling summer months, the urban layout facilitated smooth and efficient movement, allowing residents and visitors alike to traverse the city with remarkable ease. This observation led me to delve deeper into the factors that contribute to such fluid urban motion, unimpeded by the high density.

This project not only enhanced my analytical skills but also deepened my appreciation for the intricate balance between historical preservation and modern urban planning. The insights gained from studying Barcelona’s pedestrian dynamics have significantly propelled my career, providing me with a robust framework for understanding and improving urban environments.

Once I presented this project for the Bac, Miguel Roldan highly commended it. It was selected as the best project in my class, leading me to present it two additional times to incoming students from Tokyo, Japan, and a group from Penn State.
